Open Educational Resources

Retain • Reuse • Remix • Revise • Redistribute

OER are material that are in the Public Domain or have been released with an open license (for example Creative Commons).

The library encourages the use of Open Education Resources (OER) and library licensed materials whenever possible as a way to directly reduce educational costs to students.

Please consider contacting OER Librarian Ro McKernan (ext. 3954) at any time for an OER consultation or for any questions about either incorporating library resources, copyright issues or adopting/adapting OER for your classroom.

New to OER?

If you are new to OER, the State Board of Community and Technical Colleges provides an easy pathway to learn, find, use and apply OER to your teaching through a 2-week async course called:

  • "OER 101: How to Use Open Educational Resources"

If you are interested in learning more, please also check out the Open Washington site where you can also find some FAQs on OER.

OER @ WCC

PB LOGOThe Library offers all employees a publishing platform called Pressbooks that allow easy cloning, adapting or creating OER. You can also clone/create H5P (interactive activities) and use Hypothes.is for facilitating digital annotations and Reading Apprenticeship strategies.

Alternatively you can publish your material in our institutional repository Whatcom Digital Commons.

OER can also be printed and available for optional student purchase through the Bookstore.  Please use this form to initiate this process.
