Ramadan is the ninth month of the Muslim calendar, a holy month in Islam.
This year it will run mid-May through mid-June according to the Gregorian calendar. This is because the Muslim calendar follows the phases of the moon.
During Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn to sunset. However, in addition to fasting, the month is about self-restraint in general as well as generosity and service.
Take a look at this article on Ramadan from Encyclopedia Britannica for a good basic overview.
