As a public institution, WCC has to follow the law... and the law says that we have to make our materials accessible.
First of all, why? Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) require us not to discriminate against people with disabilities. In addition, Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act makes it clear that this also applies to our electronic and information technology, so our online materials must also be accessible to everyone.
Making instructional materials as accessible as possible to as many people as possible is called universal design. Using the principles of universal design for instruction helps fulfill the law. It also benefits not only people with disabilities, but others who learn in a variety of ways.
